Dr. De La Torre served as an active duty military ophthalmologist for four years. He completed his training in refractive surgery at Warhawk Refractive Surgery Center, and he performed LASIK and PRK procedures for a great number of military personal whose lives depend on great vision. Refractive Surgery – LASIK or PRK?
All-Laser LASIK
LASIK has been around now for over 20 years, and over one million Americans have had the procedure. All-Laser LASIK takes the safety and precision of LASIK to new heights, and the vast majority of patients who have this procedure see 20/20 or better!
PRK
PRK is a procedure that can be thought of as LASIK without the need to make a corneal flap. This procedure may be preferred by some people in certain professions. The results are ultimately the same as you would get from LASIK.

Which procedure is right for you?
That depends! The long-term visual acuity for each procedure will be the same, and the technical difference in the surgeries is the corneal flap. LASIK requires the creation of a corneal flap, whereas PRK does not. PRK will have a longer recovery time for this reason. However, patients who have a history of dry eye, as well as patients who may receive some form of eye trauma (e.g. athletes, fighters, etc.) should have PRK so that there is no risk of corneal flap displacement.
