Which is better, LASIK or PRK?
With laser vision correction here at Southwest Eye Institute, you have the choice between LASIK and PRK. Both have their benefits and in our hands, we find that typically several months later both procedures have the same result. Thus, the question of which procedure is better for your eyes is answered after a thorough discussion with your surgeon, that’s the VIP way!
What is LASIK?
LASIK is the most common type of laser vision correction performed. At the Southwest Eye Institute, we perform all laser LASIK where one laser creates a corneal flap and then the excimer laser is applied below the flap to correct the vision. LASIK provides minimal downtime and discomfort with a very precise result.
What is PRK?
PRK is the most flexible vision-correcting procedure available. No corneal flap is required and the same excimer laser used in LASIK is used to correct the vision. PRK requires more healing time, medication, and close follow-up with your surgeon to achieve the same visual results as LASIK, but in some patients may be a better option.
Is financing available for both LASIK and PRK?
Yes, we offer the same financing options for both LASIK and PRK at Southwest Eye Institute.
What are the steps to the LASIK procedure?
The diagram below shows the three steps to LASIK. In Step 1 we use the iDesign system to create a map of your eye. Step 2 is where we create a small flap with a laser (we do not use blades). Then Step 3 is to apply the refractive laser underneath the flap. PRK is very similar except in step 2 we prepare the surface of the eye for the laser rather than creating a flap.
