LASIK has been approved for vision correction for over 20 years, providing millions of Americans with an alternative to prescription contacts or glasses. Every year, thousands more choose LASIK because it’s a safe, effective, and proven procedure. In fact, research shows that over 90% of patients who undergo LASIK are satisfied with their results.
Even with LASIK’s strong record of safety and success, it’s natural to have questions about the procedure and the LASIK recovery process. At Southwest Eye Institute, our team is dedicated to guiding every patient through their LASIK journey, giving them the care and information they need before, during, and after surgery. Our goal is to help you feel comfortable and confident throughout the entire process.
Immediate Recovery: First 24–48 Hours
You may be surprised to learn that the LASIK procedure is the quickest part of the process. Before surgery, your surgeon will do a comprehensive consultation and pre-procedure exam to ensure you are a good candidate for LASIK. This appointment may take an hour or more, giving your eye doctor ample time to ensure your safety during the procedure and the best possible outcome.
The LASIK procedure takes just a few minutes per eye. To help you stay comfortable, your surgeon may provide sedation options to ease any anxiety or discomfort. You won’t feel pain during the procedure, but you may feel drowsy afterward and will not be able to drive. Be sure to arrange for a family member or friend to take you home.
Immediately after surgery, your doctor will give you protective eye shields to keep your eyes safe as they heal. You’ll need to wear the shields for at least 24 hours while sleeping for about a week to prevent accidental rubbing.
Your surgeon will also prescribe a combination of steroid/antibiotics and lubricating eye drops to protect against scarring, infection, and dryness. You should use them as directed.
During the first 24–48 hours, it’s normal to experience mild side effects, such as:
- Blurred vision
- Light sensitivity
- Burning discomfort, soreness, or a gritty sensation in your eyes
To support healing:
- Avoid strenuous activities, including exercise.
- Do not touch or rub your eyes.
- Do not drive until your doctor says it’s safe to do so.
You can shower or bathe, but you should not get water, soap, or shampoo in your eyes.
Short-Term Recovery: First Week to Month
If your job isn’t physically demanding, you can return to work once your doctor approves and you feel ready.
You can watch TV, use digital devices, and read, but remember to give your eyes regular breaks and use the lubricant eye drops frequently. If your eyes feel tired or sore, rest them.
Over the next few weeks, you should notice a gradual improvement in your vision and less discomfort. Dryness is one of the most common symptoms during recovery, but most people find it gradually improves within 3–4 weeks.
Your recovery will also include several follow-up appointments with your eye doctor. Be sure to attend all scheduled visits and continue using any prescribed eye drops or medications exactly as directed.
Long-Term Recovery: Beyond 1 Month
As your recovery progresses, you can enjoy the freedom of daily activities without the hassle of corrective lenses. Whether it’s spending time outdoors, driving comfortably, or simply feeling more confident in photos and video calls, many patients find that LASIK enhances their vision and lifestyle.
LASIK Recovery Tips: Do’s and Don’ts for a Smooth Recovery
Your doctor will give you detailed post-LASIK instructions, which you should follow closely. Proper care helps protect your eyes, reduce the risk of infection or scarring, and support a smooth recovery.
Recovery guidelines will include:
- Wear protective eye shields at night to prevent accidental rubbing or pressure on your eyes.
- Avoid swimming pools, hot tubs, lakes, and oceans since they may contain harmful bacteria.
- Refrain from wearing eye makeup right after surgery, and use gentle, fragrance-free skincare products around your eyes.
- Wear sunglasses outdoors to protect your healing eyes from bright lights and UV rays.
