If you’re considering LASIK, one of your biggest questions may be: How long is LASIK recovery time? Most of our patients notice improved vision soon after surgery and can return to many normal activities within 1-2 days. However, your eyes continue to heal, and your vision may stabilize over several weeks or months.
LASIK has been approved for vision correction for over 20 years, providing millions of Americans with an alternative to prescription contacts or glasses. Every year, thousands more choose LASIK because it’s a safe, effective, and proven procedure. In fact, research shows that over 90% of patients who undergo LASIK are satisfied with their results. Even with LASIK’s strong record of safety and success, it’s natural to have questions about the procedure and recovery.
At Southwest Eye Institute, our team is dedicated to guiding every patient through their LASIK journey, giving them the care and information they need before, during, and after surgery. Our goal is to help you feel comfortable and confident throughout the entire process. Schedule a free LASIK consultation with Dr. Javier De la Torre or Dr. Calvin McNelly to have your vision evaluated and get personalized answers about the procedure, recovery time, and the results you can expect.
LASIK Recovery Time: The First 24–48 Hours
The first 24 to 48 hours are an important part of your LASIK recovery time.
Immediately after surgery, your eye doctor will give you protective eye shields to keep your eyes safe as they heal. You’ll need to wear the shields for at least 24 hours while sleeping for about a week to prevent accidental rubbing.
Your surgeon may also prescribe a combination of steroids and antibiotics, along with lubricating eye drops, to protect against scarring, infection, and dryness. You should use them as directed by your doctor.
During the first 24–48 hours, it’s normal to experience mild side effects, such as:
- Blurred vision
- Light sensitivity
- Burning discomfort, soreness, or a gritty sensation in your eyes
To support healing:
- Avoid strenuous activities, including exercise.
- Do not touch or rub your eyes.
- Do not drive until your doctor says it’s safe to do so.
You can shower or bathe, but you should not get water, soap, or shampoo in your eyes.
LASIK Recovery Time During the First Week
Your post-op is generally the very next day after surgery, at Southwest Eye Institute. During this visit, your eye doctor will check how your eyes are healing, evaluate your vision, and make sure your recovery is progressing as expected.
During the first week after LASIK, most patients begin returning to their regular routines.
If your job is not physically demanding, you may be able to return to work once your doctor approves and you feel comfortable doing so. Your individual recovery time after LASIK will depend on how quickly your vision improves and on whether you experience symptoms such as dryness or light sensitivity.
Many patients can also resume driving within several days, but you should never drive until your eye doctor says it is safe.
You can generally watch television, read, and use computers or smartphones during recovery. Give your eyes frequent breaks and use lubricating eye drops as recommended. If your eyes feel tired, dry, or uncomfortable, reduce your screen time and give them a rest.
LASIK Recovery Timeline: Weeks 2–4
During the following weeks, your eyes should continue to heal, and your vision may become increasingly stable.
Dry eye symptoms are common after LASIK and can temporarily cause blurry or fluctuating vision. Continue using lubricating drops and any other medications recommended by your doctor.
Depending on your care plan, you may have another follow-up appointment.
Even when your eyes feel normal, continue following your surgeon’s post-operative instructions. Your eyes may still be healing beneath the surface.
LASIK Recovery Time After One Month
After about one month, most patients have returned to most of their normal activities.
Your vision may already be significantly improved, but healing does not necessarily end after the first few weeks. Vision can continue to sharpen and stabilize over the following months.
Your surgeon will determine when your LASIK recovery is complete based on your eye health, vision, and healing progress.
LASIK Recovery Time by Activity
One of the most common questions patients have is when they can return to specific activities after LASIK.
When Can I Drive After LASIK?
You cannot drive yourself home after LASIK.
Many patients can begin driving again relatively soon after surgery, but only your eye doctor can determine when your vision is safe for driving.
When Can I Return to Work After LASIK?
Patients with office-based or non-physical jobs may be able to return to work within several days.
Jobs involving dust, debris, chemicals, heavy physical activity, or a greater risk of eye injury may require additional recovery time.
When Can I Exercise After LASIK?
Avoid strenuous exercise immediately after surgery.
Your surgeon will tell you when you can gradually resume workouts and more intense physical activity.
When Can I Swim After LASIK?
You should avoid swimming pools, hot tubs, lakes, and oceans during the early stages of LASIK recovery because water can expose your healing eyes to bacteria and other contaminants.
Ask your surgeon when it is safe to return to swimming.
When Can I Wear Eye Makeup After LASIK?
Avoid eye makeup immediately after LASIK. Makeup, brushes, applicators, and removers can irritate your eyes or introduce bacteria while they are healing.
Your doctor will let you know when you can safely begin wearing eye makeup again.
Tips for a Smooth LASIK Recovery
Your surgeon will provide detailed instructions based on your specific procedure and eye health.
General LASIK recovery tips may include:
- Use prescription and lubricating eye drops exactly as directed.
- Do not rub your eyes.
- Wear protective eye shields as recommended.
- Avoid swimming pools, hot tubs, lakes, and oceans until cleared.
- Avoid eye makeup during the initial healing period.
- Wear sunglasses outside to reduce discomfort from bright light.
- Take breaks from screens if your eyes become tired or dry.
- Attend every scheduled follow-up appointment.
Following your doctor’s instructions is one of the most important things you can do to support proper healing.
When Should I Call My LASIK Eye Doctor After LASIK?
Mild discomfort, dryness, light sensitivity, and fluctuating vision can occur during LASIK recovery.
However, contact your care team at Southwest Eye Institute promptly if you experience symptoms such as:
- New or worsening eye pain
- Sudden or significant changes in vision
- Increasing redness or swelling
- New flashes or floaters
- A shadow, veil, or curtain across your vision
- Any symptoms your surgeon has instructed you to report
If something does not feel right, call us as soon as possible rather than waiting for your next scheduled appointment.
